MASTERSHIP SA SET TO ROCK with celebrated Endodontist, Dr Miguel Martins (The Netherlands) and Physicist, Priv.-Doz. Dr. rer. medic. Rene Franzen (Germany).

Endodontist, researcher, Aachen Laser Center academic co-worker and an absolute class act in this field - Dr Miguel Martins (DDS,MSc, PhD) will create laser addicts as the clinical and skills lecturer at the upcoming Mastership Advanced Module Courses.

"MIGUEL IS OUTSTANDING!" say many of his students, peers and patients. He also comes with the nod of approval of his long-time 'laser-father' and legend, Prof. Dr. med. dent. Norbert Gutknecht who founded this prestigious Master Program.

Physicist, Dr Rene Franzen sets the foundation of understanding light, the interaction between lasers and various tissue in a fascinating course, the "Laser Safety Officer Course" which is a certification course and subset of the Lasers in Dentistry Mastership / Master Program. Together with Dr Miguel Martins, they will journey with participants in that conversational exploration to uncover deeper understanding of light and lasers, their interactions, and getting laser-supported clinicians beyond the stage of being just laser “button pushers,” to literally Eureka moments, through applicable physics, biophysics, talking pulse duration, hertz rate, wavelengths over a couple cups of coffee! In the end, clinicians are in control to get the desired effect and perform an ethically high level of the full scope of laser-supported treatments.

Mastership Lasers in Dentistry

Sigmund Freud University Vienna

One-Year Clinical Specialisation Course in Selected Wavelengths

Level of Qualification: Level 7 (Master)

1 ECTS Equivalency: 15 Credit Points

The Mastership course is aimed at dental clinicians who would like to specialise in certain wavelengths of dental diode lasers (different wavelengths and types) and erbium lasers (Er:YAG, Er,Cr:YSGG), while keeping pace with the most innovative and minimally invasive treatment methods sought after by patients. Over the course of one year, over 10-12 attendance days split into 4 modules held over 3 educational blocks, participants are taught fundamental physical and technical knowledge at a high academic level, theoretically and practically, and how to recognise primary, secondary, and tertiary indications. After successful completion of an examination at Sigmund Freud University, this program concludes with the university certificate “Laser Therapy in Dentistry" including a second certificate, Laser Safety Officer, from Sigmund Freud University.

> The Mastership modules are a subset of the Master Professional program 'Lasers in Dentistry“ [120 ECTS credit points] at SFU university and qualifies you for an upgrade into that program if you so decide upon successful completion.

LASERS IN DENTISTRY

Lasers have been used in dentistry for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes for about 40 years, and are an indispensable instrument in any modern dental surgery. The use of lasers enables new treatment methods to be employed and lasers can meaningfully supplement more traditional therapies.

The use of lasers is associated with minimal contact, reduced vibration and pain, as well as a reduction in bleeding, leading to a more comfortable overall experience for the patient and a cleaner, meticulous technique for the dental practitioner.

Lasers are highly versatile tools that can be successfully used in a wide range of applications in the treatment of mucous membranes, hard tooth structures and bones.

Additionally, the specific properties of lasers allow the development of radically new treatments, surgical techniques, and improvements in treatment success rates are observed when lasers are applied correctly.

Modern facilities and increased customer satisfaction help ensure the long-term financial success of any dental practice and, for these reasons, you should not miss the opportunity to expand and improve your range of treatments.

Lasers are primarily used in the following fields:

  • Diagnosis: Caries detection
  • Cariology: Caries removal, cavity preparation
  • Endodontics: Reduction of germs in root canal dentine
  • Implantology: Implant exposure, peri-implantitis therapy
  • Surgery: Soft tissue and bone surgery
  • Periodontology: Cleaning of the hard tissue surface and periodontal pockets
  • Cosmetic treatments: Bleaching
  • Photobiomulation & Pain Therapy: Low Level Laser Therapy

LASER TYPES

The following lasers are taught:

  • Er,Cr:YSGG and Er:YAG Lasers
    • Diode Lasers and Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

1- YEAR MASTERSHIP MODULES

MODULE I

Laser Safety and Basic Physics

  • Learn laser safety including the Laser Safety Officer Certification (in addition to the Mastership Certificate / Diploma). This certificate meets the requirements of the trade associations for obtaining expertise as a Laser Safety Officer. They are officially recognized according to the guidelines or orientated to EN 60825-1 and ANSI Z136.1.
  • Learn laser structure, function and safe and responsible handling.

MODULE II

Er:YAG and Er,Cr:YSGG Lasers

  • An introduction to the physical and technical properties of Er:YAG and Er,Cr:YSGG lasers and their application is provided. These include among others, hard and soft tissue surgery, cavity preparation, periodontal therapy, peri-implantitis and bleaching. Laser-tissue interactions for these wavelengths are taught.
  • Skills training on models and patients treatments are offered under supervision (where legally allowed by local law).

MODULE III

Diode Lasers and Photobiomodulation Therapy

  • Learn the technical-physical principles of diode lasers and their application. The clinical indications of diode lasers are introduced and demonstrated, including skills training. These include among others, soft tissue surgery, bacterial reductions, periodontal therapy and bleaching.
