Endodontist, researcher, Aachen Laser Center academic co-worker and an absolute class act in this field - Dr Miguel Martins (DDS,MSc, PhD) will create laser addicts as the clinical and skills lecturer at the 4th South African Mastership Class, starting 30 Oct 2021.

"MIGUEL IS OUTSTANDING!" say many of his students, peers and patients. He also comes with the nod of approval of his long-time 'laser-father' and legend, Prof. Dr. med. dent. Norbert Gutknecht who founded this prestigious Master Program. [South Africans may recall Dr Martins' sophisticated mastery of Endodontics lecture, including Perio and General Dentistry at the last NOMADS 2019 congress at Kyalami.]

Together with Dr Miguel Martins, they will journey with Mastership students in that conversational exploration to uncover deeper understanding of light and lasers, their interactions, and getting laser-supported clinicians beyond the stage of being “button pushers,” to literally Eureka moments, through applicable physics, biophysics, talking pulse duration, hertz rate, wavelengths over many cups of coffee! In the end, clinicians are in control to get the desired effect and perform an ethically high level of the full scope of laser-supported treatments.

This course is geared towards dentists who would like to specialise in certain wavelengths and keep pace with the most innovative and gentle treatment methods sought after by patients. Over the course of one year, participants are taught fundamental physical and technical knowledge and how to recognise primary, secondary, and tertiary indications on ten attendance days split into 4 modules held over 3 educational blocks (see dates below).


The program concludes with an official certificate of RWTH Aachen University and is offered in collaboration with the RWTH Aachen International Academy, the post-graduate education wing of the university.


Dental laser technology and treatment concerns are typically not taught in standard academic studies in dentistry. Therefore, this program teaches the necessary professional knowledge for laser applications in dental practice at the highest academic level in theoretical lectures and practical hands-on teaching for two selected wavelength areas – dental diode lasers (different wavelengths and types) and dental erbium lasers (Er:YAG, Er,Cr:YSGG). Relevant theories and application options pertaining to laser use in dentistry are taught for those wavelengths.


Participants obtain sound theoretical knowledge in lectures and seminars led by renowned, competent and experienced international scientists and practitioners. Skills-training sessions, exercises, practical applications, and hands-on practical along modules, guide participants towards using lasers successfully and professionally in their own treatments.


Lasers have been used in dentistry for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes for almost 40 years, and are an indispensable instrument in any modern dental surgery. They enable new treatment methods and meaningfully supplement traditional therapies.

The use of lasers is associated with minimal contact, reduced vibration and pain, as well as a reduction in bleeding, leading to a more comfortable overall experience for the patient and a cleaner, meticulous technique for the dental practitioner.

Lasers are highly versatile tools that can be successfully used in a wide range of applications in the treatment of mucous membranes, hard tooth structures and bones.

Additionally, the specific properties of lasers allow the development of radically new treatments and surgical techniques, and improvements in treatment success rates have been observed when lasers are applied.

Lasers are primarily used in the following fields:

  • Diagnosis: Caries detection
  • Cariology: Caries removal, cavity preparation
  • Endodontics: Reduction of germs in root canal dentine
  • Implantology: Implant exposure, peri-implantitis therapy
  • Surgery: Soft tissue and bone surgery
  • Periodontology: Cleaning of the hard tissue surface and periodontal pockets
  • Cosmetic treatments: Bleaching
  • Photobiomulation & Pain Therapy: Low Level Laser Therapy


The course is divided into four modules requiring 10-12 days of attendance over a one year period.


  • Laser Physics & Laser Safety including the Laser Safety Officer certification (in addition to the Mastership Certificate/Diploma)
  • Laser structure, function and handling: hands-on laser-tissue interactions


Er:YAG and Er,Cr:YSGG Lasers

  • Theoretical background, clinical indications, skill training and demo treatments
  • Biophysical background (absorption and transmission in various types of tissue)
  • Clinically important for e.g. periodontics, implantology, endodontics, hard and soft-tissue surgery, cavity preparation and cariology


Diode Lasers and Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

  • Theoretical background, clinical indications, skill training and demo treatments
  • Communication and application of suitable indications
  • Clinically important for e.g. periodontics, implantology, endodontics and soft-tissue

Written examination
Presentation of five clinical treatment cases


After successful completion of the course, participants receive a Mastership Certificate/Diploma from RWTH Aachen University identifying them as a dental laser specialist, as well as an additional Laser Safety Officer certificate.

Associate Prof. Dr. rer. medic. Rene Franzen (Physicist)

Studied  physics at Düsseldorf University and completed his thesis in the  Department for Laser Medicine. Since 2001 he has worked for RWTH Aachen  University and the AALZ Aachen Dental Laser Center and is involved in  teaching and research in the field of laser-supported dentistry. In 2003  he completed his PhD thesis for which he was awarded the RWTH prize for  outstanding interdisciplinary research. Dr. Franzen teaches optics,  laser technology, dosimetry and laser safety and is also responsible for  running the AALZ’s e-learning system.

Clinical & Skills Lecturer: Dr Miguel Martins (DDS, MSc, PhD)

As a researcher and academic co-worker, Dr Martins has published various original studies in peer-reviewed journals such as Lasers in Medical Science, Photomedicine and Laser Surgery, and Lasers in Dental Science.

Dr. Martins originally graduated at the University of Porto (Portugal) in 2007, then specialised in Oral Implantology at Santiago Compostela’s University in Spain (2008), graduated as a Master of Science (MSc.) in Lasers in Dentistry at the RWTH Aachen University in Germany (2010), Masters Degree in Oral Laser Applications, Doctorate (PhD) in Lasers in Endodontics from University of Porto, and actively continues by participating in various academic societies, university research and lecturing as invited/keynote speaker worldwide. Dr Martins's aim is to provide a high-standard of dental care based on evidence-based laser supported dentistry, and special interest in his private Endodontic practice and Endodontic Microsurgery.


(Former) Course Scientific Director: The Late, Prof. Dr. Norbert Gutknecht passed away in July 2021, but we acknowledge him for his immense contribution and dedication to this successful program. His life was dedicated to building good knowledge from his pioneering works in laser dentistry as Director of the Department of Restorative Dentistry, then Director of the “Aachen Dental Laser Center," and Scientific Director of the Academic Postgraduate Master Program: “Master of Science – Lasers in Dentistry.” His teaching debunked the dubious laser claims of the early years and researched what really worked and how to use this groundbreaking technology. His final school project was in Namibia where he helped establish the dental school at the University of Namibia.

  • Laser units can be available and loaned to participants without access to lasers to present the five clinical cases by the host, BIOLASE / SciVision in South Africa and Mauritius by special arrangement.

  • The course will have a total amount of 390 hours workload and 96 presence hours.

  • The prestigious Mastership course was first brought to South Africa in collaboration with the RWTH Aachen University in 2017, following by popular demand in 2018 and 2019. The course is scheduled to take place in Mauritius for the first time in October 2019 as another option for local and international dental practitioners. 

  • Participation numbers are limited to 20 to preserve the standard of excellence of the programme. Participation in the course is confirmed with the registration fee of Euro 950 upon acceptance for a limited time on a first come, first served basis. Once  the course is full, no more participants will be allowed, even in the  case of receiving acceptance and failing to register in time. The registration fee is non-refundable and forms part of the total course fees for the year applied for.

  • The course language is English.

  • The course includes catering during presence hours and may include certain optional social events. This will be indicated in the detailed programme to participants (in South Africa and Mauritius).
