Better Dentistry For Kids

(...even Adult Kids :)

Laser dentistry is one of dentistry’s recent advances. Whilst not new, laser technology for dentistry has been developed, refined and has celebrated high level advances in the last few decades, along with laser education for dentists and hygienists. The Star Wars type laser beam delivers energy in the form of light. Depending on the intended result, this energy travels at different wavelengths and is absorbed by a “target.” In dentistry, these targets can be enamel, decay, or soft tissue. Each one absorbs a different wavelength of light while reflecting others.

Waterlase laser dentistry for kids can be used for both tooth and soft-tissue related procedures. Oftentimes local anesthesia in the form of injections can be avoided. Unlike the dental drill, Waterlase laser dentistry causes no heat or vibration, making the procedure comfortable for pediatric patients. Waterlase is also highly precise, removing only the least amount of tooth necessary, and saving more of your natural, healthly tooth structure. For soft tissue treatments it reduces the need for scalpel blades and sutures / stitches in most cases so bleeding and swelling is reduced, and healing time is faster.

From a young age, big needles, noisy drills, and numbness can trigger dental fear. Kid-friendly laser technology such as the BIOLASE lasers can help overcome dental fears by providing a much less scary patient experience. Actually you should find it quicker, easier and even fun.

Pediatric procedures that can be simplified with laser treatment:

  • Infant and child frenectomy (tongue-tied)
  • Exposure of unerupted teeth (unable to break out from the gum area)
  • Sealants (preventive dental treatment to protect tooth surfaces)
  • Fillings – Class I-V (extent of decay on tooth structure)
  • Vital pulpotomy (removal of pulp tissue)
  • BIOLASE Dental lasers are safe and effective for treating both children and adults. In particular, Waterlase pediatric laser treatments are tailored to meet the needs of small mouths with the widest variety of tips and accessories that ensure versatility. Also recommended for parents: Ask your BIOLASE Dentist or Hygienist for an "Epic Laser Clean" before your regular "scale and polish." This way underlying infections and bacteria in the pockets around your teeth get decontaminated prior to the mechanical cleaning process.
